The School of Computing is a welcoming and diverse environment that has been recognised with a Bronze Athena SWAN award. Our staff and students come from all over the world, and we are proud of our friendly and inclusive culture. We support colleagues through a number of family-friendly policies, including a core hours policy and the right to apply for flexible working, and support for staff returning from periods of extended absence (for example, parental leave).

We are seeking to appoint a lecturer, based in the Programming Languages and Systems (PLAS) research group at our Canterbury campus. The appointee will help us to build on our success in the last REF exercise when we were ranked in the top quartile of 89 Computing departments across the country, coming 12th by Research Intensity. The School of Computing has an international reputation for its research in programming languages, with csrankings.org consistently rating it in the top 10 in the world.

We invite applications from candidates with research interests that can complement or enhance the PLAS group’s existing research strengths, which spans a broad range of programming paradigms (imperative, object-orientated and functional programming) complemented by architectures and systems research in concurrency and relaxed memory. It is linked by shared interests in semantics, type systems, verification and implementation. The successful candidate will also make a significant contribution to teaching at all levels.

As Lecturer in Computing you will:

  • undertake teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate students, including the development of new modules and providing support for student learning
  • develop and extend your existing successful research career of an international calibre, securing appropriate external funding
  • collaborate with colleagues in the School on course development, delivery and assessment, taking on appropriate management and administrative responsibilities

To succeed in this role you will have:

  • a PhD in a relevant discipline to computer science or similar professional experience
  • an understanding of the UK’s funding landscape and a plan for developing research income
  • a recent track record of publication in leading international journals or conferences in the area of Programming Languages and Systems
  • the ability to make a strong contribution to the research undertaken in the School in an area relevant to the Programming Language research group

We particularly welcome applications from female candidates as they are under-represented in this area.

Please note a one page research plan and a one page teaching statement should be uploaded as part of your application, as well as a CV and cover letter.
