An exciting opportunity has arisen for 4 Apprentice Science Technicians to join the University of Kent on a 2 year training programme, rotating between our range of scientific laboratories to learn and provide technical support to all staff and students whilst undertaking a level 3 qualification in a relevant science qualification. Upon successful completion of the training programme and meeting all the criteria of the role, you will have the opportunity to remain as a permanent member of staff as a laboratory technician.

Apprenticeships are all about taking on real responsibilities whilst gaining the skills and experience you need to succeed – all with the support of knowledgeable colleagues from within the business.  

This job description sets out the accountabilities and the essential skills that you will work to achieve by completing the standard and end point assessment.

As Apprentice Science Technician you will:

  • Assist with maintaining laboratory equipment
  • Assist the technicians with the smooth day-to-day safe operations of teaching and research laboratories according to set procedures
  • Work within the three subject disciplines (Chemistry, Physic, Forensic Science) plus Infrastructure and Buildings)

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Be committed to this programme and developing existing skills and knowledge
  • Have GCSE’s in English, maths and a relevant science subject (A-C grades or equivalent)
  • Have good manual skills and dexterity.

The School of Physical Sciences

The School of Physical Sciences (SPS) is situated in a newly refurbished science laboratory on the Canterbury Campus. SPS is part of the Faculty of Sciences within the University. It currently offers a number of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Physics, Chemistry, and Forensic Sciences. Currently there are approximately 900 students and 35 full time academic staff within the School along with a number of clerical, administrative and technical support staff. SPS is a dynamic School achieving national and international excellence in both teaching and research.

Start Dates –  Should applicants currently be in education, therefore are looking for start the Apprentice in July/August we are happy to accept these applications now and a start date for later in the year can be agreed, once the academic year is completed.
