An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Experimental Officer to join the School of Physical Sciences. You will undertake specialist technical, teaching and research support to deliver the goals and milestones of the School’s Centre for Astrophysics and Planetary Science Impact Group on projects related to space and materials science. Specifically, the role entails managing, operating, developing and maintaining the Group’s Light Gas-Gun facilities and associated equipment.

As Experimental Officer you will:

  • manage and operate the University of Kent’s Light Gas-Gun to further enhance the research programme of academics
  • be responsible for ordering replacements parts and consumables as needed from research grants held by academics
  • support delivery of the research and teaching including general preparation of equipment and materials 

To be successful in this role you will:

  • be educated to undergraduate degree (BSc./MPhys./MEng. or equivalent) in a Physics or Engineering discipline or equivalent experience
  • have practical knowledge in using light gas-guns.
  • be familiar with handling shotgun primers and black-powder for making shotgun cartridges

The School of Physical Sciences

The School of Physical Sciences (SPS) is situated in a newly refurbished science laboratory on the Canterbury Campus. SPS is part of the Faculty of Sciences within the University. It currently offers a number of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Physics, Chemistry, and Forensic Sciences. Currently there are approximately 900 students and 35 full time academic staff within the School along with a number of clerical, administrative and technical support staff. SPS is a dynamic School achieving national and international excellence in both teaching and research.
