This is an important role that will be responsible for maximising R&I funding opportunities for the University, contributing to the preparation/writing of proposals and providing support to maximise grant applications.

You will be expected to actively seek out opportunities and develop meaningful partnerships to generate research and innovation income and collaborations, as well as working across the University to secure strategic large scale funding grants and, where possible, maximise the return and impact for the University. You will also be responsible for the line management of the Research and Innovation Officer, as well as supporting the general Research and Innovation team.

As a member of the Research and Innovation Support (RIS) local delivery team, the Senior Research and Innovation Officer (Pre-Award) helps to stimulate and support the Division’s research and innovation culture. While you will be assigned to a specific Division, you will be expected to work across others as necessary to ensure the success of cross-Divisional initiatives.

 In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Guiding a portfolio of research and innovation funding applications and tenders through all stages of the application process (including drafting high-quality content, costing, pricing and approvals) to maximise chances of success, liaising with internal and external stakeholders 
  • Discussing potential funding projects to identify suitable funding routes and improving the quality of applications through expert knowledge of funder expectations and critical reviewing and editing of draft applications 
  • Identifying research and innovation funding opportunities from a variety of sources (charity, government and commercial) from online sources, contacts and funder events 
  • Dissemination of identified funding opportunities and providing academic training events, presentations and meetings, utilising university networks to ensure maximum reach and take-up of funding opportunities 
  • Organising, promoting and managing various activities (eg workshops and networking events) to build research capacity

To be successful in this role you will need to have:

  • Experience in developing funding applications whether in the public, private or third sector, and supporting staff throughout the process 
  • An understanding of the research and innovation funding landscape and the rules and regulations of a wide variety of funders
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with experience of developing effective working relationships and new opportunities with internal and external stakeholders
